HAWLER MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Hawler Medical University (HMU) is located in the city of Erbil (Hawler) in Iraqi Kurdistan Region.  It has been established by the Council of Ministers of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in July 2005.  The university has been established to include in itself the following four colleges that detached from Salahaddin University in Erbil: College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and College of Nursing.

The Separation has come after a suggestion made by a number of academics from these colleges that has been supported by the president of Salahaddin University as well as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Researches.

The overall aim of establishment of HMU is to improve the medical education in the region as well as to have a better management of the medical group colleges. This should by no way be interpreted as creation of new colleges. Establishment of a university for medical group colleges is by itself, the first such experience in Iraq. HMU provides undergraduate and postgraduate studies in different medical and health sciences.

The program of study in the four colleges is in English language.

The University is responsible for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Researches of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Arbil.

HMU is connected to 4 teaching hospitals that provide facilities for practical training of students from the four colleges:

§      Rizgary Teaching Hospital – 400 beds

§      Erbil Teaching Hospital – 500 beds

§      Maternity Hospital – 200 beds

§      Paediatrics Hospital – 150 beds

University Council

The University Council is the highest authority of the university. The council holds regular meetings to discuss the general strategy and plans of the university, make decisions on issues that are at authority of the Council and make suggestions to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
